Petroleum Analysis by Mass Spectrometry

ASTM Hydrocarbon Types Methods

The ASTM mass spectrometric methods are briefly described under ASTM Programs. Complete descriptions are given in the reference cited below. It should be noted that all of the ASTM methods were developed on a CEC 21-103 mass spectrometer that is no longer generally available. This instrument scans the mass spectrum by varying the accelerating voltage while holding the magnetic field constant. If data for the ASTM methods are to be acquired on other types of mass spectrometers, e.g., magnetic-scanning instruments or quadrupole instruments, then corrections have to be made to the response factors for the sums of the characteristic ion intensities. Computer programs for making the corrections are described in Other Programs.
